Home learning

Books are able to be changed every day. We are encouraging the children to become independent and change their own books. Whilst we are sure that they will soon be in the routine of changing their own book we will give them reminders to do so. The children will be encouraged to change their books first thing in the morning. The children continue to be excited about the Reading Karate Challenge. We can’t wait to give out some black bands!

Comments in the reading record about how your child has read and their understanding of the book would be fantastic. Your child will have many opportunities to read in school too. They will read to our wonderful volunteer helpers and within phonics and guided reading sessions.

PE sessions will now take place on a Wednesday, however me may decide to take the children out for extra PE throughout the week. Please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit and all items of PE kit are named. For PE sessions hair should be tied up and earrings covered.

Welly Boots!

So that we can get out and about on the school grounds, whatever the weather, please could you send your child into school with a pair of named welly boots that can be kept in school throughout the year. A set of wet weather gear (waterproof jacket and trousers) would also be great but is not essential.

Every Friday the children will join the whole of KS1 to take part in our enrichment activities. These are activities that allow the children to learn new skills, get messy and meet new children. Please can you ensure your child has a change of suitable outdoor clothes and their wellies every Friday.

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt...

…We didn’t catch a big one!  On Tuesday Year 1 went on their first school trip to Cardinham Woods, to bring our Wonderful World topic to life.  We were extremely lucky to have such beautiful day – just like in the real story.  When we arrived at the woods we were met by Claire from Badger Forest School.  Once at camp, she explained the safety instructions of looking after ourselves and nature for the day.  We got to retell the story through the squishy, swashy grass; deep, cold river; thick, oozy mud and the big, dark forest.  Luckily, we didn’t have to go through the swirling, whirling snowstorm.  The children made their own bears out and natural clay and created large bear caves out.  We even got the make our own fires and toast marshmallows!  A massive thank you must go to Claire and Kelly, from Badger Forest School, for making our trip so engaging and exciting for the children.  Thank you to our parent helpers for coming with us.  The children represented the school brilliant – well done Year 1!

Happy New Year!
The Year 1 team hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.  We look forward to welcoming the well-rested children back tomorrow, after a busy Autumn term.  As we look forward to the term ahead, we are excited to discover our new topic of Best of British: Does Britain Really Have Talent?  Alongside this topic, we will continue to practise and develop our Phonics skills and knowledge.  Please keep up the brilliant home learning of using the Phonics Folders daily and remember to ensure your child brings them to school.  A reminder that the Reading Karate scheme has now finished but please carry on enjoying reading little and often and on a daily basis, to support your child.  Below you will see our new Learning Loops for English and Maths.  These will give you an overview of what we are learning over the next half term.

This term our topic is 'Best of British' with the key question 'Has Britain Really Got Talent?'

Have a look at all the great things we have planned for the term...

In Maths this week the children have been looking at recognising 2D shape, counting the sides, corners and having a go at describing them to a partner. Next week they will begin to put them into patterns.

This week in English the children have been learning the story 'Jolly Christmas Postman'. They have looked at ther different characters and settings, whilst creating their own stick puppets and role plays!
