Year 1 Assembly
This morning Year 1 treated their families to an amazing assembly showcasing some of their recent learning. The children shared their knowledge from science (plants) to the history of the seaside. Thank you to everyone who was able to make it, especially joining the children singing "I do like to be beside the seaside." Well, with this better weather coming up, who knows?!
FOWPA Disco
Thank you to FOWPA for organising the disco yesterday. As well as providing a great event for the children (and staff), it also supported our fundraising efforts. What a lovely way to end the half term.
EYFS Carnival/Sponsored Walk
We would like to thank those of you who attended our Carnival/Sponsored Walk meeting on Tuesday. It was great to see so many faces! We do not expect you to spend money on outfits; you are welcome to collect resources from your child's classroom if needed. If you have any questions, please speak to Mrs Yates or Mrs Divall.

Playground Project Update
This week has seen another huge development in our KS2 playground revamp supported by FOWPA fundraising efforts. When the children arrived on Monday, they were greeted by a space that looked completely different from what they had left on Friday. Overnight, the playground had been transformed into a bright, exciting area full of new games and activities for everyone to enjoy.
The children now have a scooter track, a giant Snakes and Ladders board, a draughts board, and even a Duck Duck Goose game painted onto the playground. It was wonderful to see the excitement on their faces as they explored the new additions. Laughter quickly filled the playground as the children raced around the scooter track, challenged their friends to games, and eagerly tried out every new feature. Mrs. Wilton has particularly loved teaching the children how to play draughts, and it has been fantastic to see so many pupils enthusiastically learning a new game.
The new markings have already encouraged so much teamwork, creativity, and active play, and it has been lovely to watch children from different year groups playing together so happily. Many pupils have told us that playtime is now even more fun and that they cannot wait to get outside each day! We are incredibly excited to see the playground continue to come to life, and we know these fantastic new spaces will create many happy memories for our children in the months and years ahead.

Year 2 Assembly
Congratulations to our Year 2 children who performed to a very full hall on Thursday. The children shared their recent learning, ranging from Florence Nightingale to facts about the continents. The children also sang beautifully, ending with a very uplifting performance of Three Little Birds. What a great way to start the day!
Camel Challenge Football
This Wednesday, our Year 5 and 6 boys' football team participated in the Camel Challenge, hosting teams from the surrounding area for an exciting series of matches. The boys played a total of four games, emerging victorious in three and drawing the last.
As the competition came to an end, the boys found themselves facing a tense showdown known as the golden goal, where the next goal would determine the winners. Despite their superb effort over the next six minutes, the opposition scored first, leaving our team with a well-deserved silver medal.
The boys demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and teamwork, making us all proud. Special recognition goes to Leo, who made his debut on the team and bagged himself some impressive goals. Congratulations to all the boys on a fantastic performance - you made us all proud.
Today it's the turn of our Year 3 and 4 girls' team taking part in their football festival after school - good luck to them all.

Ten Tors 2026
Three teams of staff from WPA took on the Ten Tors charity walk, tackling a demanding 13 mile route across rugged terrain in what proved to be both an epic and grueling challenge. Despite the tough conditions underfoot, spirits remained high throughout, with teamwork and determination carrying everyone to the finish. We were fortunate to have dry weather, which made a huge difference, and in the end, all involved came away with a real sense of achievement and plenty of enjoyment along the way.
Our charity of choice for this year was CoppaFeel. Thank you to everyone who has kindly donated raising an incredible £753 so far!

Attendance
Attendance remains a national priority for schools. Emailed home today you'll find a reminder of some FAQs regarding attendance sent out last term. In addition, we have noticed on a few occasions parents are asking to collect their child early. Just like arriving late, collecting early also has an impact, not only on your child's education but can cause disruption to others. Please bear this in mind when making any appointments towards the end of the school day. Please note we can't authorise early collection for reasons such as wanting to get away early for travel purposes. By working in partnership, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion, we can ensure that your child receives the very best start in life and enjoys every opportunity to thrive here with us.
FOWPA Uniform Sale - Thursday 14th and Friday 15th May

Year 2 Trip to Wheal Martyn
On Tuesday, Year 2 went to Wheal Martyn to learn about what working life was like in Cornwall many years ago. We were given a very informative guided tour by volunteers who used to work in the China Clay industry and even at Wheal Martyn itself. It was fascinating to watch the waterwheel power the slurry pump using metal rods - no electricity or fuel needed! We saw photographs and models of what workers wore and the tools they would have used. Some of the workers in the pit were children not much older than us. We also took part in a workshop to find out more about what China Clay is and how important it was for Cornwall. We got to use some of the tools and even dressed up as some of the workers. You can see from the photographs what a great time we had. A special thank you to our parent helpers (without which the trip could not have happened), the staff and volunteers at Wheal Martyn for making our day so special and to Cornwall Heritage Trust who donated £100 to help with transport costs.

Safeguarding Review
Earlier in March, we welcomed the Local Authority's Education Safeguarding Lead Officer to carry out a full Safeguarding Review of our school, as part of their regular cycle of visiting schools. The purpose of these visits is to provide external oversight to ensure the school's culture and policies remain aligned with the standards of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). The day's visit included: meeting with members of the leadership, safeguarding and pastoral teams; meeting with staff and pupils; visiting classrooms, as well as scrutinising policies, procedures and practices.
We received the report last week and are pleased to share the summary:
"Wadebridge Primary School presents as a friendly, thoughtful and well-organised school with an established safeguarding culture. The leadership team is reflective, engaged and committed to continuous improvement. Staff at all levels demonstrated awareness of safeguarding responsibilities, and pupils spoke warmly and confidently about feeling safe, listened to and supported. The school's strengths lie in its proactive engagement with families, consistently applied safeguarding systems, strong SEN provision, and the quality of relationships between adults and pupils."
The visit also generated some very helpful further developments to consider, such as reducing the number of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads in line with the size of the school; providing the option of a 'Report a Concern' function on our website as well as streamlining the safeguarding content covered in our curriculum on our website.
WPA Choir joins Songfest at Hall for Cornwall
The WPA choir had a wonderful experience performing at Hall for Cornwall as part of Songfest 2026 on Tuesday. They joined over a thousand pupils in an impressive, massed choir, and also enjoyed fantastic performances from the Cornwall Youth Choir, which inspired many of our young singers. The choir look forward to showcasing some of the songs in front of their families after Easter.
Year 4 Stay and Learn
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Year 4 Science Stay and Learn last week. The children had a wonderful time, as we hope you did too, taking part in a range of science investigations.
Children's Hospice South West Bake Sale
Well done to Gracie in Year 5 for taking action and deciding to organise a charity bake sale this week. With the support of many others who took the time to bake delicious cakes and biscuits, she made a whopping £162.65 for Children's Hospice South West.

Lady Time Traveller Visits Year 2
Year 5 - A Royal Reply
Year 5 received a Royal Reply last week! Before February half term, Year 5 wrote letters to the King as part of their persuasive writing unit. Their aim was to write and persuade King Charles to award Kathryn Johnson and Mary Jackson honorary OBE's for their services to space travel. Their mathematical genius helped John Glenn to be the first astronaut to orbit Earth and land safely, as well as being involved in the Moon Landing of 1969. Sadly, because of their race, and the level of discrimination and segregation at the time, their involvement was kept hidden - inspiring the book and film, 'Hidden Figures'. Well done, Year 5. A Royal approval of your work!
From the Year 5 team
Lady Time Traveller Visits Year 2
Year 2 would like to say a huge thank you to FOWPA for funding our visit from the Lady Time Traveller (Mrs Hughes). The children had a fantastic morning immersed in the world of Florence Nightingale. The children were able to share their knowledge of her work and life. Mrs Hughes also shared some new information about Florence to further their understanding of her life events. They handled some interesting artefacts: a Victorian hot water bottle; a wooden stethoscope; glass bottles for medicine; a special cup to eat/drink from and a chamber pot. This object surprised them the most as they thought it was a sink! Mrs Hughes showed them how to use a bandage to support a broken arm (like a solider in the Crimean War) before having a go at being a nurse practicing on each other.

Year 3 Assembly
On Thursday, Year 3 presented their amazing assembly about the Romans and Celts. They shared their learning from a range of activities linked to the wider curriculum, including: Roman numerals; historical costume art; mosaic making, cooking pizzas and not forgetting those catchy songs! One of the highlights was the video showcasing their re-enactment of the Roman invasion of Britain.
This feedback received, sums it up brilliantly:
"I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all of the effort you and the Year 3 team put into the Romans topic. My child has really enjoyed it and was raving about the WOW day. It was a real joy to watch the children singing and presenting this morning, and the footage of the WOW day was brilliant and made us all laugh."
Thank you for coming to share in this experience, as well as getting involved with the enjoyable (and just slightly competitive) quiz at the end. Well done Year 3!
Year 2 Stay and Learn
It was so wonderful to see everyone at the Year 2 Stay and Learn this morning; a huge thank you to everyone who was able to attend. The children had a wonderful time sharing snapshots of their learning with you all. During the session, children were able to showcase some of their learning in Maths (coin recognition, choosing and using their correct coins); English (using conjunctions within a sentence and formulating expanded noun phrases); Science (habitats and materials) and Geography (naming continents and oceans together with recognising human and physical features). We are so proud of the hard work the children have put in so far and this was an excellent way to celebrate with you. Thank you once again for attending and for your continued support.
Parent/Carer Engagement Survey
Thank you for responding to our survey. We will be busy looking at all the responses and sharing the outcomes and next steps with you as soon as possible. Nicky Hepworth, who leads on the Parent/Carer Engagement Framework for Cornwall Council, was in school today to meet with me to discuss this important area of our development plan, as well as experiencing the Year 2 Stay and Learn.
Year 4 Stay and Learn - Friday 27th March
We look forward to seeing family members of Year 4 at their Stay and Learn next Friday 27th March. Doors open after morning drop off for refreshments, with a start time of 09:00. To help the morning drop-off routine, any Year 4 families driving are asked to try parking in the staff car park first (double parking is fine).
Lockdown Practice
This morning we held our annual lockdown practice. Everyone responded really sensibly and calmly. Before this took place, the class teachers let the children know about the practice and what they had to do in an age-appropriate way. What wasn't expected was the fire alarm being accidentally set off straight afterwards - once again the children and staff responded so well.
A school lockdown is a safety procedure implemented on the very rare occasions where it is necessary to seal off the school so that it cannot be entered from the outside. This ensures that pupils, staff and visitors are safe in situations where there is a hazard in the school grounds or outside the school in the near vicinity.
Wadebridge Town FC Boot Bank
Wadebridge Football Club have set up a Boot Bank. The purpose of this is twofold, to prevent boots going to waste when they can still be used, and to enable children to have access to boots if they are unable to afford to buy a pair. You may have spotted a collection point just outside our main entrance for any donations.

World Book Day
World Book Day began with a special assembly led by Gangsta Granny (AKA Mrs Orme!), with the theme of reading being great fun and full of adventure. It was wonderful to see the fantastic costumes across the school, with pupils and staff bringing their favourite book characters to life. Throughout the day, children enjoyed a range of creative activities, including making movie trailers for books and inventing their own versions of George's Marvellous Medicine. The day ended with a lovely paired reading session with mixed year groups, giving children the chance to share stories together, followed by a well-deserved biscuit for everyone.

Parent/Carer Survey - Have your say!
So far we have had 38 responses to our survey. We would really appreciate hearing from as many families as possible. For example, questions about home learning can often split opinion, and not just at our school. We will be using the feedback from you, alongside that of pupils and staff, so please share your views. We've extended the deadline to Monday 16th March.
Wadebridge Festival of Speech and Language
This week, 36 of our pupils from Years 1 to 6 proudly represented our school at the Wadebridge Festival of Speech and Language. It takes a great deal of courage to stand in front of an audience and recite poetry, and every child who took part did so with confidence, expression and real flair. We are incredibly proud of all of them for stepping outside their comfort zones and showcasing their speaking skills so brilliantly. Each child received a certificate for participating, and we were also delighted to return with some third and second place awards, as well as an impressive first place. A huge well done to every pupil who took part - you represented our school wonderfully.
Reception Stay and Learn
The Reception team would like to thank all of the parents, grandparents and carers for coming to their Stay and Learn this morning. During their session, the children showcased their level 3 Phonic skills and tricky word recognition. They followed this with a reading and writing activity, where the children were able to show their adults what they could do. We hope this gave everyone a good insight into how hard the children work and what wonderful progress they have made with reading and writing this year. Thank you again for coming, and for your continued support with reading and writing at home.
Congratulations Evie - Former WPA Pupil
On Saturday 7th March, Evie (former WPA pupil - now in Y8 at Wadebridge School) will once again be playing for East Cornwall Schools against Sefton Schools FA - Girls in the ESFA Champions Cup Semi-Final. Good luck, Evie!

Cornwall Council - Support for Parents/Carers
Cornwall has a variety of help and support on offer for both first-time and experienced parents and carers to celebrate parenting, learn new skills and develop confidence. Their parenting support offer focuses on child development, building positive relationships with children and creating opportunities to join parenting communities, have fun and access peer support from other families. If you are interested, do take a look at their website (link emailed home today) which offers many free workshops.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Best wishes,
Chris Wathern
St Piran's Day & World Book Day - Thursday 5th March
To celebrate St Piran's Day and World Book Day (on the same day this year), there is the option of your child wearing Cornish colours: black, white and gold or dress up as a book character to celebrate - or a combination of both!
Please don't feel you need to go to any unnecessary expense; homemade costumes or keeping it simple is fine. Equally, dressing up isn't for everyone so if your child prefers to attend in their own clothes/school uniform, that is fine.
Throughout the day, the children will take part in a range of book related activities including some paired reading with buddies in the opposite key stage over a hot chocolate and a biscuit. For this, we ask that each child brings in their favourite book to share.
Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) start again next week
A reminder that ECAs re-start next Monday 2nd March and finish for the term on Friday 27th March.
Reception Stay and Learn - Friday 6th March
We look forward to seeing family members of Reception at their Stay and Learn next Friday 6th March. Doors open after morning drop off for refreshments, with a start time of 09:00. To help the morning drop-off routine, any Reception families driving are asked to try parking in the staff car park first (double parking is fine).
Parent/Carer Engagement Survey
A reminder that our survey is now open and closes on Friday 6th March.
We recognise that parents, carers and families are the most important influence in a child's life. As part of our work with Cornwall Council's Parent Carer Engagement Framework, we have chosen three areas (below) we would like to develop further with you.
We would really appreciate your time in completing the survey to support our next steps in the three areas below, thank you - see link in email.
1) Learning at Home
Aim - Parents/carers (including staff and pupils) are part of a Home Learning review which leads to a co-constructed Home Learning Policy to support children's learning outside of school.
2) Tailored Family Learning Opportunities
Aim - Building on what we currently have in place for parents/carers to be involved with school life and their child's education (e.g. FOWPA events, Stay and Learn events, assemblies, Grandparents' Day, PTCs, etc.) there are further opportunities for parents/carers to engage, e.g. volunteering opportunities, workshops which meet parental needs.
3) Parental Representation and Voice
Aim - For parents/carers to have a structured opportunity to express their views and have these taken into account for whole school matters. To create a Parent Ambassadors Group of parents/carers from across the school who would meet with the Headteacher on a termly basis with an agenda to discuss ideas/feedback, which would then be shared with the whole school community. Alongside this we would create a Parent/Carer Charter. If you would be interested in possibly joining the Parent Ambassadors Group, please share your name and email address in the survey.

Year 4 Assembly
Congratulations to Year 4 for their wonderful assembly this morning. We were all taken on an historical journey with the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. The performance was fantastic, ending with a roaring rendition of a catchy 'Heave Ho!' song. Parents and family members were then shown the children's work before being challenged on their knowledge of multiplication facts using the iPads.
Scholastic Book Fair w/b 23rd February
We are excited to let you know that the Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place in school during the week beginning Monday 23rd February.
Books will be available to purchase each day after school, and children can also use their World Book Day token towards the cost of a book. We can accept cash payments, or you can choose to pay online using a QR code provided at the fair. Please note, if there is only one copy of a particular book available, you will need to pay for your order, and the book will then be delivered to school for us to hand to your child once it arrives.
We hope you'll come along and enjoy browsing the wonderful selection of books.
