Spring 1 - Week 1 and 2: Why Go Exploring?

Spring 1 - Weeks 1 and 2
Why Go Exploring?

Welcome back! We really hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas break and are ready for the New Year. It was lovely to see all the children again and to hear all about their Christmas excitement!

English

We have started a new learning journey and are reading "The Great Explorer" by Chris Judge, which we are all really enjoying. We started by travelling around the classroom to find illustrations from the book and making predictions about what the book might be about and what might happen to "The Great Explorer" on his travels. We then read the book to see if any of our predictions were right. We have been learning to use questions marks and used these when thinking of questions we might want to ask Tom (the Great Explorer), such as, "What will you see when you go exploring?". We then worked on using adjectives in our sentences to make them more interesting. We used 2a sentences, which have 2 adjectives in them split by a comma to describe the items Tom took with him on his journey, which included "a bright, shiny torch" and "a yellow, waterproof tent". A great start to the year!

Maths

We are now learning about place value to 20 and have done lots of counting forwards and backwards to 20 to learn the correct sequence. We then looked again numbers to 10 to refresh our understanding of them before moving on to looking at numbers to 20. The children used numicon, dienes and rods and tens frames to make different numbers within 20 before making their own number lines using these concrete objects. There was some great learning on show!

Wider Curriculum

Our question this half-term is “Why Go Exploring?” and we started by learning there are 7 continents in the world and we learnt the names by singing along to a very catchy song, which you might have heard being sung this week! We also learnt about the equator and that the countries close to it are very hot. We then looked at Alaska and made comparisons between life there and in Wadebridge – they definitely have more snow than we do! On Wednesday, we used our design skills in DT and made windsocks using tissue paper, which we plan to test out next week in our Science lesson. We will continue with our learning next week but the children have made a fantastic start!

PE

In PE, we are learning to do different types of rolls in gymnastics and the children really enjoyed practicing these. We are also learning some basketball skills and they were very enthusiastic about trying to bounce the ball with their fingertips and at the right height (waist height). Some children have been practicing in the playground at playtimes.

Handwriting

We were delighted to give out our first Tin handwriting certificates this week and are looking forward to giving more out over the following weeks. We have spoken to children about what they need to be doing consistently in their writing to achieve their Tin award (finger spaces, letters on the line, letters formed correctly with tall ascenders for letters like “h” and “l” and descenders beneath the line for letters such as “g” and “y”). They are all keen to achieve their certificates!

Reminders

PE continues to take place on Thursdays so please send your child into school wearing their PE kit.
There is no outdoor learning this term as we are focussing on computing skills instead so full school uniform on Fridays for the time being please.

Many thanks and have a lovely weekend.

We look forward to seeing you all back on Monday.

Weeks 7 and 8: Holidays are Coming!

Week 7 and 8 – Holidays are Coming!

Wow! We’ve had so much fun in Year 1 and we’ve been very busy every single day!

English

We have been using Christmas scenes to work on using describing sentences with adjectives in. We have created adjective word banks and used these to create some powerful sentences. The children came up with some great descriptions, such as "crackling fire", "scrumptious food" and "glistening tree".

Maths

We have been continuing our learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We looked at repeating patterns using shapes with concrete objects and then with pictures in our books. We then ended our week with our end of term assessments, which the children all tried their hardest. We have worked really hard in Maths this term so we ended with some Christmas themed maths lessons on number bonds to 10 and some addition practice.

Art

We learnt about the Northern Lights in the Arctic, watching a video of the Lights and then discussing the colours and movements. We then had a go at making our very own Northern Lights artwork using various lines in chalks and smudging them to create different effects. They look fantastic and have made a great display in both our classrooms.

Christmas Play

What a show that was! We are so proud of how well the children performed and they looked fantastic in their outfits – thank you all for providing them. We really hope you enjoyed the show as the children absolutely loved putting on this year's nativity and are sad it has all come to an end. Roll on next year!

Christmas Activities

We had our Christmas party last Thursday, which the children really enjoyed – there were party games, dancing and lots of fun!

We were very lucky that Charlie from Cornwall Cricket came in to deliver a cricket session to each class. He worked with the children on using the “regular cup” technique for catching and gave them some tips on how to throw underarm. We really enjoyed our session.

We also had a board games day, which was lovely to see the children playing games together, explaining the rules to each other and playing without any cheating! They shared their games beautifully.

On Monday, we had our trip to the cinema – thank you to those parents who were able to come along and help us walk down and back. We watched Arthur Christmas and the children sat brilliantly throughout. It made us all feel very festive!

Finally, the whole school came together today to watch the staff perform “Little Red Riding Hood” the pantomime – they all got involved in the right places and there was a lot of laughter!

Phew! We’ve crammed so much in over the last couple of weeks and there are definitely some tired faces (staff as well as children!) so please do rest up before the Christmas fun begins.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and we look forward to hearing all about your holiday fun when we’re back together on the 4th January.

The Year 1 Team

Week 6 - Christmas is in Full Swing!

Autumn 2
Week 6 - Christmas Fun!

Christmas is in full swing in Year 1 and what a week we've had! Nativity rehearsals and two performances (the children were absolutely amazing) - a big thank you for supporting with the costumes and we hope you enjoy the show!

We had the Christmas Fun Run, Christmas jumper day and Christmas lunch - it was so good!

On top of that, we the children worked really hard to complete end of unit assessments in English and in Maths and we were really proud of the way they worked hard on them. To end our English unit of writing instructions, the children used the instructions they had written and followed them to make some yummy, sticky marmalade sandwiches and were all "have a go hippos" and tried them. As a treat for their hard work, we got to watch the Drama Club perform their panto, Cinderella Rockerfella, on Friday afternoon - they were a great audience and laughed in all the right places!

We have lots of lovely Christmas activities planned for next week, including Christmas card making and some Northern Lights artwork that will brighten our classrooms up for next term.

Here are a few reminders for next week:

Monday
This will be our last Nativity performance - if you haven't yet seen it then you're in for a real treat :).

Thursday
We are planning to have a party in the afternoon with party games so children are welcome to come into school wearing their party outfits for the day. Party games will replace our PE lesson on this day.

Friday
No outdoor learning this week so please send your child into school in their full school uniform please. We are going to have a board game day instead, so if your child would like to bring in a board game to play with their friends, they are welcome to do so but please put their name on the box so we know who they belong to.

Thanks and have a lovely weekend.

The Year 1 Team

Christmas Fun Run

Putting the Fun in Fun Run :)

We did it! Despite the rain pouring down just as we were about to set off, the children ran around the Fun Run course wearing their jumpers, Santa hats and Christmassy headwear - and they looked fantastic!

There were some speedy runners and along the way we met a Christmas Elf - lots of high 5s were given - and got caught in a snowstorm! We certainly had the fun as well as the run!

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored their child in aid of South West Children's Hospice - the link is on our Facebook page if you still have sponsorship money to add.

Autumn 2 - Week 4. Wonderful Wadebridge!

Autumn 2, Week 4 - Wonderful Wadebridge

This week has been full of fantastic learning in Year 1, which has also been filled with practising our songs for our Christmas Nativity, alongside Year 2.

English

This week, each class has finished writing their very own Paddington adventure story – Paddington Saves the Day (1W) and Paddington Saves the London Eye (1B). We started our lessons by using our story maps to help us retell the story to our talk partners or together as a class. Then, we were given sentence starters which we first copied, for example, ‘Just then Paddington saw…’, then our job was to complete the sentence in our own words, thinking about all those lovely language techniques we have worked on over the topic.

Maths

To start the week, we learnt how to subtract by finding the difference. Finding the difference involved finding how many numbers are between two given numbers. To do this we looked at pictorial representations and number lines, then we used our skills of counting on or counting backwards. Continuing on, we combined all our learning over the unit to look at adding and subtracting 1 or 2 numbers, through ‘more than’ or ‘fewer than’.

Finally, to conclude our addition and subtraction topic, we ended our week with our end of unit assessment, which the children tried really hard at and were fantastic “Keep Going Koalas”, well done Year 1! Next week we will move onto our new maths unit – shape.

Wider Curriculum

This week in wider curriculum we have put our geographer’s hats on so we could explore our question “Why Didn’t Paddington Come to Wadebridge?” some more! We started the week learning what makes something a human or physical geographic feature and discussing examples of these. We then cast our minds back to our walk around Wadebridge, making a list of the human or physical features that we saw while out on our walk – which we were very enthusiastic about! We continued our learning by comparing the key geographical features of Wadebridge with those found in London.

Next week, we will consolidate all our geography learning and will write a letter to Paddington describing what Wadebridge is like. Hopefully, he may even want to come and visit after reading them!

Reminders

Please can you ensure to return any remaining cinema letters in the coming week and get those tickets booked for our Christmas Nativity. It’s definitely not to be missed! The Year 1 Team.

Autumn 2 - Week 2 and 3

Week 2 and 3

Wow! What a busy two weeks of learning we’ve had in Year 1 – alongside learning and practicing the songs for our Christmas Nativity performance.

English

We’ve been reading Paddington Bear and exploring the vocabulary within the book. The children have been learning to use adjectives within their work to describe items that he might have packed in his suitcase.
The children then pretended to be Paddington Bear and wrote a postcard to Aunt Lucy in Peru to let her know he had arrived safely, what London was like and what had happened to him so far. We saw some wonderful adjectives describing how he was feeling, including nervous, worried, excited and delighted.

In week 3, each class wrote their own Paddington adventure story – Paddington Saves the Day (1W) and Paddington Saves the London Eye (1B). These were written using the children’s ideas and they made story maps to help them retell the story to each other.

Maths

We have been working hard learning to subtract. We talked about when we subtract, we are taking away so the number is getting smaller. The children started by using objects when subtracting and then subtracting by crossing out pictures before moving on to counting backwards on a number line. Finally, they learnt to count backwards in their heads by putting the bigger number in their head counting back. They have been working really hard and we have seen a lot of “Keep Going Koalas” when it got tricky, well done Year 1!

Wider Curriculum

The children have been continuing their learning under our question “Why Didn’t Paddington Come to Wadebridge?”

We started by making bread rolls, just like Thomas Farriner the baker in 1666. Thankfully we didn’t start a “Great Fire” and the bread rolls were delicious! The children have artists too this week, making Great Fire of London artwork, tearing and collaging tissue paper and adding black silhouettes of buildings. They've certainly brightened our classrooms up! We finished our Great Fire of London learning by using all our knowledge to write a diary entry like Samuel Pepys who kept a diary of the fire. We moved onto looking at toys from the past and were very fortunate that Mrs Orme brought in some lovely toys from the past. We had fun playing with them and comparing them to toys the children have now. We discovered quite a few differences between past toys and present day toys, including that past toys were made from different materials and didn’t need batteries.

Autumn 2 - Welcome Back!

Autumn 2
Week 1 - Blowing into the new half-term!

It was lovely to welcome the children back to school after a half-term break and they must have rested well because they have worked so hard this week, even with the weather disruption on Thursday!

English

We have been so excited to read our Paddington Bear story and the children really enjoyed listening to the story before using their retrieval skills to answer questions. We looked at some of the vocabulary in the story that was new to the children, such as adjusted, unusual and tremble and we talked about what these words mean and found other words that are similar. More learning on Paddington to follow next week.

Maths

Continuing with addition, we have been adding using word problems so the children have had to listen carefully to the word problem and use their reasoning skills to work them out. We have used number lines to support our counting on as well as putting the bigger number in our heads and counting on. We then started learning how to subtract and, using counters and tens frames, the children answered a range of subtraction questions and we will continue with subtraction next week.

Wider Curriculum

We started to learn about the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the children have been enthusiastic “find-out flamingos” and learning lots of new facts. They learnt the Great Fire started on 2nd September 1666 at a bakers shop in Pudding Lane and that it spread quickly because the house were close together and made of wood. The children made their own timelines of events in the 5 days of the Great Fire. We also looked at the differences between the past and present in how fires are put out. The children could name what equipment present day firefighters have and we compared that to what they had in 1666.

Computing

This week, we used the Paint programme on the Ipads today and were impressed by the children’s drawing skills as we had some great pictures produced. We learnt how to change colour and how to change the thickness of the pencil. We had some great creations!

Wild Tribe

We had our last session of Wild Tribe with Mrs Blackbird today and she brought back the sticks the children collected before half term (having taken them home to dry them off) so we could have a campfire. The children were very sensible and listened carefully to her instructions of how to feed the fire and how to kneel on one knee to toast their marshmallow she had brought them as a treat. The children have really enjoyed their outdoor learning sessions and we are really pleased we can continue with these (albeit without Mrs Blackbird) until Christmas so please do continue to send your children into school in their outdoor learning clothes on Fridays.

On Monday, we will be making bread with the children so please send in your 50p donation if possible.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Year 1 Team

Week 7

Week 7 - London calling!

Our first half-term complete! Wow, what a fun packed half-term with so much learning.

We’ve loved settling into Year 1 and the children have already made so much progress since starting in September and we’re extremely proud of them for how well they have adapted to their new routines and of how hard they have worked so far. We can’t wait for next half-term!

English

This week we have been exploring poetry and reading “In My Garden”, which is a poem about what the poet can see, hear, smell and find in her garden. After talking about rhyming words and playing a rhyming word game, we found the rhyming pairs in the poem. We then looked at autumnal pictures and spent some time describing them, using adjectives. We are learning to be a bit more adventurous with our vocabulary, so we avoided “good” and “nice”. Using these ideas, the children then wrote their own new verse for the poem and we had some lovely ideas from “shiny conkers” to “crunchy leaves”.

Maths

We have been continuing our learning about addition and looking at number bonds within 10. The children have used a variety of concrete objects to find which two numbers go together to make a given number to 10 and have been recording their number sentences neatly in their books. We learnt to systematically record them to ensure we recorded all number bonds. The children have worked really hard in Maths this week.

Wider Curriculum

This week, we started to learn about London and looked at some of the famous landmarks. There are so many and the children enjoyed sketching some of these in Art in the style of Jo Peel. We had some fantastic efforts, including Big Ben and Tower Bridge. In History, we learnt all about King Charles III, including that he has a Sister and 2 Brothers, 2 Sons and 5 grandchildren. He lives in Buckingham Palace and likes to play polo and go skiing. Did you know he even learnt to fly a helicopter? The children thought that was quite cool!

Reminders

PE will remain on Thursdays so please continue to send your child into school wearing their PE kit on these days. We are delighted that our outdoor learning sessions will continue to Christmas on Fridays. Please send your child into school on these days wearing their outdoor learning clothes. We have a campfire planned for the first Friday back so please ensure your children are in long sleeved tops and trousers.

As it is getting cooler (shiver!) please do send your child in each day with a coat as we do try to play outside even in wet weather. They are very welcome to bring in a pair of wellies to change into at lunchtime break when wet – they are kept in our cloakroom.

Have a lovely half-term break and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 30th October. Don’t forget to put your clocks back!

Week 6

Week 6

English

Year 1 have been busy writing their very own bear fact files this week – packed with information about brown bears; where they live; what they eat and some interesting facts. The children have been able to bring together all they have learnt in science about brown bears and combine it with their new knowledge of how to write a non-fiction fact file. On Monday, they are going to share these with their reading buddies in Year 4 and we can’t wait to see what they think!

Maths

We have been learning to count on from a number using numicon and number lines. Children learnt to always start with the bigger number and to start counting on from that number rather than always going back to 0. They have taken real care when recording their own number sentences in their books.

Wider Curriculum

We are moving onto our second part of our learning journey and started with some geography. We looked at the countries that make up the UK and children had a go at drawing the flags to go with them. We learnt that London is the capital city of England and we looked at some of the different landmarks in London before drawing some of them in our books. The children knew lots of facts already about London – including that there are lots of buses, loads of trains, there is a big clock tower called Big Ben, there are theatres, lots of shops, the King lives there and there is a Natural History Museum. We’re looking forward to learning more about London over the coming weeks.

RE

This half-term, we have been learning what Christians believe God is like, which has included learning about the parable of The Lost Son and the story of Jonah and the Whale. The children have had some great ideas about these stories and, today, we finished our learning by listening to some hymns often sung in Church by Christians. The children then created some beautiful pictures about what Christians believe God is like.

Bear caves

Bear caves

As promised, here are some photos of Year 1's bear caves they have made. The children worked in groups, displaying plenty of teamwork turtle skills to design and decorate caves fit for brown bears to hibernate in. They then added some bear-y good facts (sorry!) to their caves. These are now proudly on display in our classrooms for all to see.
