Lanlivery Primary Academy   Week 4 and 5

Posted 02/10/2024
by Lisa Harper

Over the last couple of weeks we have continued to look at farms and in geography year 1 have been looking at some of the farms local to Lanlivery and what sort of farming happens there. The pre-school children have been making the most of the first signs of autumn with the leaves falling off the trees. They have collected a variety of leaves which they have crafted with and even gave some of the green ones to the class pet stick insects. The reception children have been spotting patterns in the environment, continuing patterns and creating their own patterns.  The children also made some amazing fluffy sheep.

It has been another great week for Marazion class. We have celebrated National Poetry Day 2024 by taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt for the world's largest poetry lesson!
In maths, we have continued to work on place value and year 3 have just began their journey with addition and subtraction where they worked with key vocabulary and have applied number bonds within 10 ready to use their key knowledge across hundreds soon.
In Geography, we learnt about different volcanoes, where they are in the world and what 'active', 'dormant' and 'extinct' volcanoes are.
We enjoyed learning more cricket skills with Cricket Chris and dodging skills in PE (netball).
In Science, we've been learning about three different types of rock (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) and how they are formed. We've already modelled some in edible form and are learning a song, with actions to help us remember. So this week we're going to put on our safety specs and investigate which rock would make the best statue.

On Thursday, we learn about Harvest ahead of our Harvest Assembly on Monday.

The children have been developing their SHAPE for learning well-can they tell you what this means?

On Thursday next week, we are celebrating Mental Health Awareness day where they children are welcome to wear something yellow and we will be exploring different ways of keeping mindful.

Guiness World Record attempt!

Also, a copy of the poem and a thank you letter are in the files below - each child will get a paper copy of these to have!

Autumn 1 - Week 4 and 5 - Awesome Autumn Learning

The children have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm and curiosity towards learning. During the first few weeks in school, we noticed that many children showed an interest in learning more about animals. So, last week, we read ‘Owl Babies’ and learned some facts about owls. The children were able to use vocabulary to describe owls such as nocturnal, talons and owlets. This week, we have been learning about animals that hibernate and have enjoyed the story ‘Don’t Hog the Hedge’.

Literacy
We have now learned 8 sounds in our phonics lessons and the children have been keen to learn more sounds and actions. We have been practising our ‘robot talking’ to blend short words. It’s been lovely to see them choosing to practise their letter formation in COOL time. In their writing books, the children have applied their understanding by identifying and writing the initial sounds of words.

Maths
Last week, we focused on matching objects. The children showed real confidence in matching objects, whether that be matching based on shape, colour, size or pattern. This week, we have been thinking about the different way we can group objects.

Next week, we are learning all about apples! We will be exploring the life cycle of an apple, developing our vocabulary linked to apples, investigating what we find on the inside of apples, using our observational skills to create apple paintings, using apples to explore printing and creating repeating patterns with paints and much, much more. If anyone knows of any local apple trees or if you find yourself going out and about this weekend where apples trees are, we would really appreciate lots of apples being brought into school on Monday morning for our wonderful activities!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Best wishes,
The Reception Team

Wednesday 2nd October

We had a lovely visit today from children's book author Sally Crabtree, who we will be working with tomorrow for National Poetry Day. She read us books and sang us songs. We then designed our own magic rings to wear on the train tomorrow. We imagined that we were on a magic train and pictured what we could see out of the windows. Some of us went to magic fairy land, others to cookie world and some of us saw dragons and unicorns! We will be turning these images into a book on the train tomorrow.

What a fantastic start the school year. The children in Year One are settling in so well and are showing so many of our school values through their work and play.
Our first 'Big Question' is 'Where on Earth are we?'. We have been learning to find the United Kingdom on maps and globes and have been learning some key facts about the four countries that make it up. We have also learnt about the county that we live in and how to find it on a map of the UK.

In the last week we have begun 'The Big Brush Club'. This is an NHS initiative to help improve children's oral health. The children have really enjoyed having a brush-along to Hey Duggee or Danny Go's tooth-brushing songs. They are getting used to the routines and know how to keep their toothbrushes clean.

In art, the children have been using their sketchbooks to try out drawing different kinds of line. They have looked at the work of Maurice Sendak (author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are) and have thought about how he uses different kinds of line to show the texture of hair, scales, teeth and claws. The children also did some printing with autumnal colours in order to enter the art competition at Callington Honey Fair.

We have been learning about materials in science and have been learning some of the more scientific vocabulary we can use to describe their properties such as transparent, opaque, absorbent, flexible and rigid.

The children have continued to love our daily Drawing Club sessions. These magical sessions allow the children to enjoy wonderful stories, learn some new vocabulary and write number and sentences codes in order to bring aspects of their drawings to life. It is so much fun and the children are wonderful code-creators.

In maths we have thoroughly explored numbers to 10. Through out 'Mastering Number' sessions we have practised subitising and partitioning skills and through our mathematics sessions we have learnt to read, write, order, compare and draw numbers on the number line. This is an excellent foundation for our next step into addition and subtraction.

In our COOL time (Choose Our Own Learning), many of the children have particularly enjoyed creating their own wonderful settings using the wooden blocks. The have created homes for the Wizard from one of our stories and many different animal homes. Their verbal explanations have been so detailed and so much thought has gone into the way they have been built. It has been great to watch the children work so cooperatively and communicate so well to share their ideas for moving the models forwards.

National Poetry Day
Thursday 3rd October

Today the children in Year 2 went on a wonderful trip on the train from Looe to Liskeard. This was part of a poetry project funded by Great Western Railways. During the day the children took part in creating a song about their train journey, they made special golden tickets and also some wonderful parcel pets.

It was a lovely day and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Take a look at the wonderful photos from our day ...

The Autumn Term is in full swing!

Year 6 are settling brilliantly into their new, responsible roles as the oldest in the school and we are all getting used to our lovely new name, 'Copper Valley Junior Academy!'

The children have enjoyed their historical enquiry into the lives of the Anglo-Saxons and they are also proving to be enthusiastic Scientists, as we explore the fascinating Science behind 'Light'.

In English, we have been looking at the various tools and language features that make effective suspense writing and the children are currently finishing their own, innovated suspense story! We are particularly impressed with their determination to improve their handwriting!

Our RE question for this half term asks, 'What would Jesus do?" and the children have shown what deep thinkers they are, when challenged with these 'Big Questions'!

Across the two bases, we are thrilled to have been placed joint first, alongside Callington Primary Academy, for our entries to the Art competition at the Honey Fair, with one of our very own Year 6 children achieving 4th place in our age range!

In French, we have been learning how to talk about our families and in Computing, we are learning all about networks and how these work, both locally, nationally and internationally.

Year 6 have shown amazing positivity when it comes to their Maths and they have shown us what strong Reasoning skills they have! We will continue to build on their Arithmetic skills with daily practice and we are encouraging them to learn their times tables at home, as well as reading regularly.

The mornings are getting darker and the days are getting soggier, however, Year 6 will not let this dampen their spirits, as we continue to plough through this long Autumn Term, towards that time of year that cannot yet be mentioned!!

Thank you for all you hard work so far, year 6; Mrs David and Miss Cunningham are so proud of you all!

Looe Primary Academy   Autumn 1, Week 4: Road Safety and lots of learning!

by Jasmine Bolger

Road Safety and lots of learning!

What a great week we have had in Foundation/Year 1.

We were very lucky to have a Road Safety Roadshow that taught us all about how to stay safe when we are out and about. We really enjoyed learning the dance and words to ‘Stop, Look and Listen.’ We were also taught about how important it is to stay close to, or hold hands with our adult when crossing the road. The children really enjoyed learning all things road safety!

In Phonics, Year 1 have been learning their new ‘ie’ sound. We then practised writing this in different words. In Maths, we have also been looking at one more and one less. We have been building towers and finding the correct numbers that are one more and one less!

We have also all been learning about the weather. Every morning we discuss what the weather is like and we’ve been focusing on using amazing adjectives to do this. My favourite ones this week are ‘the sun is golden’ and ‘the sea is sparkly.’ How brilliant! We have also been thinking about the right clothing we need depending on the weather.

On Friday we have our 40th birthday celebration for the school. This is going to be a great day. Please let me know if you will be attending either through email or letting me know during meet/greet.

Thank you!

The Foundation/Year 1 Team

September 2024

We have had a busy first month in Year 4. The children have all settled in wonderfully and have adapted well to their new Year 4 routines.

In Geography this half term we are looking into climate change. Our unit question is "What is climate change and what can we do about it?" We started our unit of learning off by researching what climate change is and learning about different climate zones. The children explored what some of the causes of climate change are along with some of their impacts. We also linked our Geography unit to our Science unit of learning which is focused on Habitats and Conservation. This had been helping us investigate different animals from around the world and how they and their habitats are being affected by climate change.

In English this month we have been reading stories that raise issues and dilemmas. Our key texts were 'The Great Kapok Tree' and 'The Shaman's Apprentice'. The children learnt about the characters in both stories as well as their setting 'The Amazon Rainforest' before learning about the issues and dilemmas that arose in both stories. The children had the opportunity to focus on fronted adverbials, perfect present forms and expanded noun phrases.

In Art the children created chalk pictures for our local Honey Fair competition before starting their unit of learning on drawing/sketchbooks and Comic Art. They explored comic art and researched the comic book artist Dav Pilkey before having a go at drawing some of his art work and creating their own characters.

This month Year 4 also had the opportunity to help out in a local community project whereby they tidied and painted one of our local play parks equipment and planted new bulbs in the park. The children loved this experience.

This half term our key question is 'How did we live before metal?'
We will be finding out about the Stone Age through to the Iron Age and exploring life of these people.  Our key text is Stig of the Dump by Clive King and then we'll be writing information texts all about prehistoric times.
In science we will be looking at the different stages of Scientific Enquiry and how experiments are conducted fairly.
We're learning how to say hello and basic greetings in French.
In art we are looking at the different kinds and how to construct collage pieces - and submitting some of these to the Honey Fair for their art competition.
In PE we will be learning how to play a game of football and all the skills needed to control a ball.
We will also be learning the song I've Been to Harlem and learning about the pentatonic scale.

Welcome Back!

We are looking forward to another year of learning here in the ARC. We said our sad goodbye's to Joe and Dawid at the end of last term and we are very happy to welcome Leo, our newest member into the ARC. Leo will be joining us on Tuesdays and Thursdays initially until he can transition into the school full time.

This term is all about learning new routines. The children have been practicing their independent skills with their new TEACCH stations. TEACCH is a system where the children complete a number of tasks independently. The boys are proud of their independent work and they begin to use these skills at other times in the day.

In our Literacy, we have been focusing on fairy tales. We have learnt the stories of The Gingerbread Man, Three Billy Goat's Gruff, The Little Red Hen and Little Red Riding Hood. Our cooking sessions have been linked to these stories and we have enjoyed reading and  following  the recipes to create our delicious bakes; so far this month we have made Mr Wolf's Pancakes, cupcakes for granny, gingerbread men and a goat's cheese bridge. Can you guess which stories the recipes have come from?

We have linked PSHE with art and we have been using sticks and stones to make our families. We have been exploring all the things that make us special. Belonging to our different families ( home and school) helps us to feel special!

This month we have been able to complete lots of our activities as a team. RJ and Jake worked together to create the ARC family picture. Eddie has been extra kind when he sings Freddie's favourite songs.

In science we are learning about the seasons. Mrs Cansdale combined this with her Geography topic which is about our local environment and following maps. Last week the children had a great walk out to the Tamar Valley Centre. It was great to notice the leaves on the trees, explore the different creatures that were about and Jake loved exploring the wind turbines.

"Goldilocks and the three bears is what we have been looking at this week at nursery. The children have enjoyed exploring the themed tuft tray, re-creating the story using the props available and exploring voice sounds such as a deep voice for daddy bear, a soft voice for mummy bear and a high squeaky voice for baby bear.
The children have been getting creative decorating bears, making paper plate bears and have made their own bear toast for snack!

In phonics we have been talking about pets and the children have been using instruments to match animal sounds, identifying the different sounds that animals make and using our bodies to explore and create different sounds.

In maths, we continue to practice KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) We have been finding numbers in everyday life and sorting objects and identifying how many.

Wadebridge Primary Academy   Super Swimming, Star Stories and Fascinating Volcanoes!

Posted 01/10/2024
by Abigail Miskowicz

Swimming
WOW! We had our first swimming lesson last week and children amazed us with their positive attitudes and exemplary behaviour. They represented the school incredibly and we cannot wait for our next sessions.

English

What a fabulous week of story writing! The children have digested all of their learned knowledge and skills so far in Year 3, to produce their first piece of narrative writing. Using their story plans, maps and through imitating The Beasties, the children have created their own version of the story. We’ve had mythical creatures, rewarding dragons and monstrous sheep to name a few! Their challenge was to use suffixes, speech marks and fronted adverbials. Well done, Year 3, for your wonderful efforts!

Maths

We have finished our place value unit by comparing numbers to 1000 and estimating numbers on a number line to 1000. Tricky learning encompassing different counting patterns of 10s, 100s, 5s, 50s and even 40s!

Wider Curriculum

Our learning journey has progressed from Science into Geography. The children have discovered the four layers of the Earth; we learned some incredible facts about each layer too! The children have explored how and where volcanoes are formed, as well as the positive and negative effects of living near a volcano. Did you know that the soil near volcanoes is extremely fertile and the mud can provide benefits to your skin? We continue our learning journey by investigating the causes and impacts of earthquakes.
