Here's a
snapshot of the exciting learning that has taken place in our Year 3 and 4
classes this week:
English:
Exploring Non-Chronological Reports
We have
embarked on our new unit focusing on non-chronological reports. The children
have been identifying key features such as clear headings, introductory
paragraphs, subheadings, and the use of formal, third-person language. They
have also been practicing how to group information into paragraphs and support
their points with relevant details and examples.
Mathematics:
Fractions and Time
In Year
3, we concluded our work on fractions, reinforcing our understanding of unit
and non-unit fractions. We then transitioned into exploring time, learning to
read both analogue and digital clocks, including those with Roman numerals.
Year 4
students built upon this by delving into 24-hour time formats, enhancing their
ability to read, write, and compare times across different clock systems.
Geography:
The Journey of a Cocoa Bean
Our
geography lessons took us on a journey tracing the path of a cocoa bean from
farm to chocolate bar. We examined the stages of cocoa production, the
challenges faced by cocoa farmers, and the environmental impacts of cocoa
farming. This study linked back to our previous discussions on Fair Trade,
highlighting the importance of ethical consumer choices.
Science:
Understanding the Digestive System
In
science, we explored the human digestive system, learning about the roles of
the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum. The
children discovered how each part contributes to the digestion and absorption
of nutrients.
Religious
Education: Significant Christian Figures
Our RE
sessions focused on important figures in Christianity and the concept of
sacrifice. We discussed individuals such as Abraham, Moses, Ruth, and Mary,
exploring how their actions and sacrifices have influenced Christian teachings
and values.
Physical
Education: Football Skills Development
In PE,
the children have been honing their football skills, particularly dribbling and
ball control. Through various drills and activities, they practiced maintaining
possession, changing direction, and improving coordination on the field.
Art: Inspired
by Georgia O'Keeffe
Our art
lessons were inspired by the works of Georgia O'Keeffe. The students studied
her technique of zooming in on flowers to create abstract pieces. They then
applied this approach to their own artwork, focusing on details and
experimenting with colour and form.
Reading
at Home
We kindly
encourage continued reading at home, as it significantly enhances learning
across all subjects and fosters a love for literature. We always enjoy hearing
about your children's current favourite books!
Thank you
for your ongoing support.

We have continued to look at countries we can fly to with our focus last week being France. We took a closer look at the famous French landmark, the Eiffel Tower.
The children didn't believe that you could get to the top, so we watched a clip of a family visiting the Eiffel Tower, and how you can climb lots of stairs, or even get in a lift to take you to the top of the tower to look out across city of Paris.
We said some simple French phrases and the children practised saying 'Hello' and 'Goodbye' to each other in French. William also shared with us how to say, 'thank you' with 'merci', so we used this at snack time.
We also looked at how the Eiffel Tower is built and used paper straws to cut and create some of the structure using a silhouette of the tower.
We also completed some French flag artwork using blue and red tissue paper to complete the correct area with the correct colour.
This week we have been looking at where we may go for a cold holiday, what activities we could do, and what we would need to pack. We looked at skiing holidays, climbing snowy mountains, sledging and ice-skating. The children were amazed that these activities were not only done at Christmas time, and some countries have snow a lot of the year.
Lots of learning and understanding the world around them as we take a closer look at some different countries.
In other news, an email has been sent home from school for those parents of children transitioning to Reception in September. Tuesday 8th July is our transition morning for those children. If your child attends pre-school on a Tuesday, then we will walk them over to Lantic class. If your child does not attend pre-school on Tuesday mornings then please take them to the school entrance for 9am, they will then need to be collected from the school again at 11.45am.
Any questions then please do come and speak to one of the team.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Pre-School Team.

Ahoy from Storytellers Nursery!
This week we've been setting sail on a nautical adventure! Our little explorers have been busy diving into all things under the sea and pirate-themed.
We made magical mermaids with sparkles and shells.
Built our boats and
tested to see if they would float
Created pirate
necklaces fit for a captain
Mixed up mysterious
pirate potions full of colour and fizz!
The imagination has been flowing like the tide,
and the children have loved every splashy second of it. We're so proud of their
creativity and curiosity-what a week of fun and discovery!

This month we completed our Geography topic on Cornwall before starting our History topic on World War One. The children began looking into to the question 'Was Britain Ready for World War One?' The children started this unit by investigating when and why World War One started as well as exploring some of the main events during this war. The children also investigated which countries were involved in World War One and how. The children are currently learning about other aspects of WW1 such as soldiers, trench life, children, women and how technology evolved during this time all to help them answer our topic question.
In Literacy, we studied two books linked to WW1. We read and studied 'The Little Hen and the Great War' along with the story of 'Sergeant Stubby'. The children completed lots of work on both stories and then planned, wrote and edited their own short story which involved both the main characters of the above books meeting each other during the war.
In Maths, the children continued to work hard on their times tables before completing the MTC test. They also completed the White Rose statistics unit before carrying out some of their own class surveys and creating their own bar charts to present their findings.
This month we were lucky enough to take part in sports week which involved the children completing lots of exciting sporting events in order to help earn house points for their teams. The week ended with our traditional sports day.

We've had a busy and creative time this week!
In Design and Technology, the children have been designing their own biscuit packaging, carefully considering elements like the target audience, colour schemes, design features, product name, and even the ingredients. There's been some fantastic creativity and thoughtful planning. Later this week, we'll be baking the biscuits and evaluating our projects - checking how well the final products meet the needs of our audience in terms of taste, texture, packaging appeal, and budget.
In English, we're ready to begin writing our own adaptations of Aladdin. The children have already come up with some exciting new settings and characters, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how these imaginative ideas unfold in their finished stories. Once complete, we'll upload the stories to Showbie and begin building our shared school library of creative writing - a wonderful legacy of their work.
In Maths, we are wrapping up our final unit of the year. This will free up the last few weeks for consolidation and some exciting independent problem-solving projects, where the children will apply their skills in fun and practical ways.

We were lucky to have another fantastic sports day on Friday the 20th June. Many of the parents came to celebrate this special event and we all enjoyed a family picnic in the sunshine. Well done to the children in Plaidy (Red Team) for being the overall winning team this year.

The children in Year 2 had a wonderful trip to have a look around Looe Library on Monday 16th June. The staff at the library gave us a guided tour and we completed a library scavenger hunt. At the end of the trip we were able to try scanning some of the books on the special machine so that we could see how books are taken out and returned. We were then given a library card so that we could activate this with our parents and become members of the library.
While some of the class were exploring the library, we to play in the park with our friends. We are so lucky to live in such a wonderful town . Hopefully, many members of the class will start visiting the local library.

Another wonderful week has come to an end. On Wednesday, it was Sport's Day. Everyone did such a fantastic job in the sprints, egg and spoon, sack and relay races. Well done! You all showed superb sportsmanship and we enjoyed cheering on the whole school.
We have continued our enquiry 'Does Polperro Always Stay the Same?' by exploring photographic evidence to see what Polperro was like in the past and comparing this to the Polperro we know today. The children were surprised by the differences and were able to recognise the harbour and old pilchard warehouse. In Science, we looked at rocks and grouped these based on their appearance and in Art we experimented with different techniques to model clay; by practising flattening, cutting and using tools to add detail. We will build on this to eventually make our own clay pilchards.
In English, we have been writing our own poetry and creating performances with our peers. We have worked hard on demonstrating our understanding of rhythm, rhyme and repetition.
Maths has been focussed on Time, which can often be a challenge. However, all the children have persevered with reading the time and are enjoying applying their knowledge throughout the school day.
Congratulations to Alfie and Amber for being chosen as Landaviddy's People of the Week and a big well done to Iylah for achieving her 66 club badge.
We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you next week.

We've had a busy and exciting week here at preschool!
We kicked off the week with Coach James, who's been helping us get ready for Sports Day! The children have loved getting active and practicing their running, balancing, and cheering skills. It's all building up to our big event-Sports Day is on Thursday, 10th July, so please remember to send your child in their team colour top. We can't wait to see you there!
In Maths, we focused on counting out objects from 1 to 5 and matching them to the correct number cards. The children really enjoyed this hands-on activity, and it was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they matched numbers with big smiles on their faces.
Our Phonics sessions were extra fun this week as we explored two new sounds: l for leg and h for horse. A few of our clever friends even noticed that these sounds appear in their own names-what a lovely moment of connection!
Outdoors, we had a very messy and creative time with paint! The children loved using their hands to explore colours, textures, and movement. From handprints to swirls, our outside area was full of laughter, discovery, and LOTS of paint!
We're also excited to announce that we've entered the Liskeard Show on 12th July! Head over to the Domestic Tent on the day to check out our special preschool entry-our little artists have been working hard and are very proud.
Lastly, by now you should have received your Welcome Pack for Reception Class. If you haven't got yours yet, just let us know and we'll make sure you get one.
Thanks for reading-check back next week to see what else we've been up to!
The Pre School team.

It's been a highly active week this week and we've absolutely loved it! We started off by beating Pelynt 10:1 on Monday - well done to the boys who partook in that match and who have played throughout the season. You should all be proud of yourselves! Especially as I'm very happy to confirm that we are the official League Cup Champions! Bridge School Games was only last week and everyone performed brilliantly. The sportsman ship and determination were fantastic. They learnt the art of triple jump yesterday and we were practicing dolphin kick and butterfly in the pool today... I LOVE A SPORTY WEEK!
Maths:
Year 5 have just finished their unit on Statistics where they have learnt to read data and graphs. They are now moving onto Shape, which is always a nice topic.
Year 4 have completed their unit of Position and Direction and have moved onto solving problems with money.
English:
We have created wanted posters about the cruel and evil giant, Comoran and have been describing his appearance for the police. We've also looked at the features of good fictional stories involving giants to identify what we will need to include in our own stories.
Computing:
We are back, looking at the Mars Rover, but the Mars Rover 2 this time. We've delved into pixels and what they do to produce the picture from the digital lens. The children ended up designing some great pixel images on an excel spreadsheet.
RE:
Talland had a look at baptism today and now understand why people get christened and realise why they need a font, water, a candle, god parents and other important components that compliment this special day.
CONRATULATIONS to Tabbi for being noticed this week for her kind attitude towards younger children and making sure that they feel happy and content during lunch times. It made me really proud to witness it... well done!
That's all from us in Talland this week. We hope you have a fabulous weekend and can't wait to see you all on Monday.
Signing off from Mr. Langley, Mr. Bishop and Miss. Colton.
